Summary:
Out of my Mind is a resource that would be most beneficial in intermediate and secondary classrooms. However, if a teacher would like to enhance their inclusive classroom, it could be used in earlier grades. Out of my Mind is a novel written from the perspective of an eleven year-old student who has a physical and verbal disability (Cerebral Palsy). The novel addresses social bias issues and social devaluation ("when a person is evaluated negatively by a perceiver" (Wolfensberger, 2013, p.21)). Furthermore, the author portrays the challenges and limitations both the education system and society place on individuals with special needs.
